Ben Freeman is a queer Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and producer who sings about the big hurts and quiet joys of being alive. His music is marked by soulful storytelling; a quiet, introspective lyricism; and an adventurous harmonic sensibility. Outer space shows up frequently in his songwriting, long roads do too. A cross somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder, Freeman’s music rewards slow listening; sensuous and big-hearted, it is music of longing and wonder.

In 2023 Freeman rolled out a set of retro-inspired alternative R&B/soul singles, produced by Jackson Hoffman. These songs, “Baby Mine,” “Curiosity,” and “Long Distance” (a duet with fellow indie artist Nora Rothman), evolve Freeman’s sound in a pop-focused direction while retaining the intimate and introspective quality that is his signature. 2023 also saw Freeman focus on his live set, including a solo show at Rockwood Music Hall and sets at The New York Songwriters Circle at The Bitter End, Sofar NYC, and Queerchella Music Festival; as well as gigs at Club Curious, Brooklyn Music Kitchen, The Porch, and serving as the opening act for a CreativeMornings event at the National Arts Club in Gramercy Park. Freeman also recently sold out a set of one-of-a-kind vinyl singles recorded live in the studio at Leesta Vall Sound Recordings in Brooklyn.

Previously, 2022’s self-produced album Quiet Fury was a portrait of a moment of personal reckoning. Unruly as the life processes that birthed them, full of religious imagery and a hymn-like quality, the album took a direct-to-the-listener approach, aching to be a companion on listeners' own journeys of inner and outer freedom. 2015’s EP Providence (produced by Oliver Hill of Coco and Pavo Pavo) was a collection of heartbreak songs written and recorded in the midst of the transition from college to adult life and out of an early love into a place of maturity.

A theater artist, ritual leader, and facilitator outside of his music practice, Freeman brings a sense of ceremony and community participation to his shows.
